Our SOS (Specialized Opportunities for Seniors) program has been created to aid in encouraging the adoption of senior horses through our program. We see a lot of 25+ horses still healthy, happy and completely capable of being excellent companions or even light riding horses. This program hopes to help these horses find safe retirement homes, who may simply need a bit of help with end of life costs. As our program runs completely on donations, we are setting up a fund where donations can go directly to this SOS program and the horses in it.

WHAT DOES THE SOS PROGRAM COVER?

* Up to $350 annually for veterinary expenses (shots, teeth, care, euthanasia, etc.)

* Up to $100 annually for farrier expenses

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR THE SOS PROGRAM?

Horses who we have listed for adoption that are eligible for this program will have it noted in their adoption listing. When an adopter sends in an application for that particular horse, they will be asked during the follow up screening process if they are interested in SOS assistance. If they say yes, then an additional form will be signed when the horse is adopted that covers the SOS program and what costs are covered based on discussion with the adopter and the horses individual needs! We just ask that applicants are honest - if they do not need SOS assistance, please let us know so that we can help other horses and adopters who may need it. If you do not need SOS assistance and something changes in the future, we are happy to set up an SOS assistance at that time - we are always here to help our adopters and our horses as best we can! Never feel as if you are stuck saying yes or no!

I ADOPTED A HORSE THROUGH NEW START THAT WAS 25+ AT THE TIME BUT IT WAS BEFORE THE SOS PROGRAM
- ARE WE ELIGIBLE?

The short answer is YES, absolutely! If you are struggling to continue keeping up financially with your adopted senior horse and would like some aid with other items, we can discuss with you - if it means your adopted horses doesn't  have to change hands, we will help as best we can!

AN ALTERNATIVE OPTION AVAILABLE

Another option for adoptees of senior horses, is they can choose to receive an in-kind tax receipt at the end of each year as long as they submit their feed bills, farrier bills, and veterinary bills for their adopted senior horse prior to December 31st of each year. We will provide you with an a tax receipt for the cost of those care items for that year. This is a way that we can provide you with a form of reimbursement for your kindness in providing a senior horse with a permanent retirement home! This opportunity is eligible to all adopters who adopt a horse 20 years of age and older.

Bills that you can submit for this reimbursement opportunity:

Grain, Supplements, Farrier, Veterinary, Essential Items (i.e. De-wormer)

We do not provide tax receipts for boarding or hay costs.
